Znaczenie w historii nauki mały|Ordowicki denkowiec z rzędu Favositida (stan Indiana, USA) Zapalski odkrył paleozoiczne rafowe , w tym dewońskie z Gór Świętokrzyskich oraz najstarsze znane z syluru Gotlandii. Wykazał, że u paleozoicznych koralowców denkowych miała miejsce fotosymbioza. Z franu Gór Świętokrzyskich opisał nowy rodzaj Sapounofouskilites Zapalski, 2012, a z karbonu Szkocji rodzaj domniemanych stułbiopławów Caledonicratis Zapalski & Clarkson, 2015.
