Николай Ботев е български специалист в областта на науките за населението, работил в академични институции и за Организацията на обединените нации.
Биография Николай Ботев е роден през 1961 г. в София. Средно образование завършва през 1979 г. в тогавашното 31 ЕСПУ. Завършва Висшия икономически институт през 1983 г. Има магистърска (1991 г.) и докторска (1993 г.) степен по демография от Пенсилванския университет.
По време на кариерата си работи във ВИИ/УНСС (в бившата Лаборатория за демографски изследвания), в Икономическата комисия на ООН за Европа (като ръководител проект, а по-късно ръководи и звеното за населението), във Фонда на ООН за населението (включително като директор на офиса за Централна Азия). Работил е и в Световната банка.
До нахлуването в Украйна е част от програмата Digital Professors на Висшата школа по икономика‘One of the Biggest Advantages of HSE University Is Its Multi-cultural And International Environment’ в Москва. В продължение на години чете лекции в Международния институт по стареене (INIA) в Малта. Членувал е в експертната група на Националната академия на САЩ “Research Agenda and New Data for an Aging World”https://nap.nationalacademies.org/initiative/panel-on-a-research-agenda-and-new-data-for-an-aging-world.
