El 27 de febrer de 2020 se'n restituí el topònim inuktitut de Kinngait.
Kinngait és on es va descobrir la Cultura Dorset que data d'entre 1000a.C a 1100. El topònim de Cape Dorset li fou assignat pel capità Luke Fox en honor d'Edward Sackville, 4t Earl de Dorset el 24 de setembre de 1631.Cape Dorset named most 'artistic' municipality from the CBC
