David Michael Metcalf, nado en Newcastle o 8 de maio de 1933 e finado o 25 de outubro de 2018, foi un numismático do Reino Unido vinculado á Universidade de Oxford, especializado na moeda medieval, do Imperio Bizantino, dos Estados cruzados e dos Balcáns.Morrisson, Cécile. Traxectoria O seu pai, Thomas Metcalf, fora un ministro metodista, e a súa nai, Gladys Moore, exercera como mestra. A familia procedía de Yorkshire, aínda que tiña un carácter moi itinerante por mor da dedicación do seu pai, motivo polo que Michael naceu en Newcastle.

Metcalf estudou Xeografía na Universidade de Cambridge, onde posteriormente obtivo o seu doutoramento baixo a dirección de Philip Grierson, cunha tese acerca da circulación monetaria nos Balcáns de 820 a 1355, que foi publicada en 1965.

Posteriormente, traballou na Sala de Moedas Heberden do Museo Ashmolean, da Universidade de Oxford, á que chegou da man de Humphrey Sutherland.
