A Gobius a sugarasúszójú halak (Actinopterygii) osztályának sügéralakúak (Perciformes) rendjébe, ezen belül a gébfélék (Gobiidae) családjába és a Gobiinae alcsaládjába tartozó nem.
A Gobius halnem első képviselői 23 millió évvel ezelőtt jelentek meg, a miocén korban.
