A Morpho a rovarok (Insecta) osztályának lepkék (Lepidoptera) rendjébe, ezen belül a tarkalepkefélék (Nymphalidae) családjába és a Morphinae alcsaládjába tartozó névadó lepkeneme, melybe körülbelül 29 fajt és 150 alfajt sorolnak be.
Tudnivalók Ezek legtöbbjét az Amazonas-medence trópusi esőerdőiben találhatjuk, de néhányuk az Andok magashegységeiben honos, mások a hegylánc alacsonyabb, nyugati nyúlványain, illetve Mexikó száraz területein élnek.Eugène Le Moult|Le Moult (E.) & Pierre Réal|Réal (P.), 1962–1963. Les Morpho d'Amérique du Sud et Centrale, Editions du cabinet entomologique E. Le Moult, Paris.
Az idetartozó lepkék óriás méretűek, átlagos szárnyfesztávolságuk 7,5–10 centiméter, azonban a Morpho hecuba elérheti a 20 centiméteres szárnyfesztávolságot is.
