A Barbonymus a sugarasúszójú halak (Actinopterygii) osztályának pontyalakúak (Cypriniformes) rendjébe, ezen belül a pontyfélék (Cyprinidae) családjába tartozó nem.
Előfordulásuk A Barbonymus-fajok Délkelet-Ázsia és Észak-Indonézia nagyobb szigeteinek a vízrendszereiben fordulnak elő.
