Quelle di Steve Roach sono lunghissime composizioni per strumenti elettronici e non, che spaziando tra ambient, new age, space music e musica etnica; le sue composizioni aspirano a ottenere un effetto di trance nell'ascoltatore; a seconda dei casi, i brani di Roach possono risultare molto statiche e prive di ritmi oppure averne. Biografia
Roach è nato a La Mesa, in California nel 1955. Dopo aver imparato a suonare il sintetizzatore da autodidatta all'età di vent'anni,Scheda su All Music Guide, ripubblicato su Pandora Music, Ultimo accesso 5 settembre 2009. ha esordito con Now nel 1982, che risente fortemente l'influenza dell'elettronica berlinese. Dopo aver pubblicato Traveler nel 1983, ha inciso, nel 1984, Structures from Silence, la sua prima vera incursione nella musica d'ambiente. L'album ha ottenuto giudizi critici molto positivi, tanto da venire considerato il suo primo capolavoro. Nel 1986 ha pubblicato la serie di tre album Quiet Music. Alla fine del decennio, dopo aver visto il film L'ultima onda, Roach ha viaggiato in Australia (diventando così il primo compositore ambient a servirsi di tale strumento).«Instrument owner lauds soothing effects,» The Advocate (Baton Rouge) 7 giugno 1998. Servendosi del didgeridoo e di numerosi field recording registrati in Oceania, ha pubblicato, nel 1988, il doppio album Dreamtime Return, a detta di molti la sua uscita migliore. Poco più tardi, Roach si è trasferito a Tucson, dove ha fondato lo studio di registrazione privato Timeroom.
Tra gli anni 1990 e 2010, il compositore ha pubblicato molte decine di album, molti dei quali per la Projekt Records. Molti di essi sono collaborazioni con altri artisti, tra cui Robert Rich, Michael Stearns, Jorge Reyes, Kevin Braheny, Vidna Obmana, Erik Wøllo e Robert Fripp; molte produzioni del periodo gli sono valse giudizi critici positivi (si segnalano, ad esempio, The Magnificent Void del 1996 e Midnight Moon, entrambi incisi in solitaria, nonché le numerose collaborazioni con Rich e Obmana).
Durante la pandemia di COVID-19, l'artista si è esibito in streaming e pubblicato i relativi concerti sotto forma di album.
Vita privata Roach è sposato con la scrittrice Linda Kohanov.
