Foi realizada em 30 de março de 1992, no Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, em Los Angeles, às 18h30min no horário local. Durante o evento, foram distribuídos os prêmios da Academia em vinte e três categorias, e a transmissão ao vivo foi realizada pela rede televisiva americana American Broadcasting Company (ABC), com produção de Gilbert Cates e direção de Jeff Margolis. O ator Billy Crystal foi o anfitrião da premiação pelo terceiro ano consecutivo. Três semanas antes, em uma cerimônia realizada no Century Plaza Hotel, em 7 de março, foi entregue o Oscar Científico ou Técnico sob apresentação de Tom Hanks.
The Silence of the Lambs venceu cinco categorias, incluindo a de Melhor Filme. Destacaram-se também Terminator 2: Judgment Day com quatro prêmios, Beauty and the Beast, Bugsy e JFK com dois, e City Slickers, Deadly Deception: General Electric, Nuclear Weapons and Our Environment, The Fisher King, In the Shadow of the Stars, Manipulation, Mediterraneo, Session Man e Thelma & Louise com uma vitória. A apresentação televisionada alcançou mais de 44 milhões de telespectadores nos Estados Unidos.
Indicados e vencedores Os indicados à 64.ª edição do Oscar foram anunciados em 19 de fevereiro de 1992, no Samuel Goldwyn Theater, em Beverly Hills, por Karl Malden, presidente da Academia, e pela atriz Kathleen Turner. Bugsy foi indicado a dez categorias; JFK veio em seguida com oito.

Por seu trabalho em Boyz n the Hood, John Singleton tornou-se o primeiro afro-americano e a pessoa mais jovem a ser indicada à Melhor Direção.
