Hlavným lídrami tejto kapely boli Marc Bolan a Mickey Finn. Skupina debutovala v roku 1968 folk rockovým albumom s názvom My People Were Fair and Had Sky in Their Hair... But Now They're Content to Wear Stars on Their Brows, ktorý sa v britských hudobných rebríčkoch dostal na 15. pozíciu. V 70. rokoch sa skupina T.Rex stala jedným z najvýznamnejších predstaviteľov hudobného žánru, nazvaného glam rock. Ich naznámejšími hitmi boli piesne „Hot Love“, „Get It On“, „Telegram Sam“ a „Metal Guru“.
