Old school hip hop je počiatočná éra hip-hopovej hudby (1979–1984).
Dejiny Túto éru definujú jednoduché texty s témou "partying and having a good time", no najskôr sa objavili zložitejšie skladby obvykle s politickým kontextom. Tými sú napríklad Grandmaster Flash & The Furios Five a politicky nekorektné "The Message" (1982).
V tejto ére sa vznikol tzv. battle rap alebo tiež freestyle rap. Najstarším tzv. 'beefom' alebo konfliktom boli tzv. "Roxanne Wars", keď samozvaná Roxanne slovne zaútočila na UTFO, ktorí vydali pieseň "Roxanne, Roxanne" v roku 1984.
