Етимологія Назва роду походить з латинського loigos — «хаос», «руйнування», та роду Lactobacillus. Назву можна довільно перекласти як «молочнокисла бактерія з рідини», оскільки більшість видів роду беруть участь у псуванні продуктів, зокрема у процесах квашення і бродіння.
