A finais do século XVI e comezos do XVII, un mamanatowick (xefe tribal) chamado Wahunsunacawh creou unha poderosa organización que abranguían máis de 30 pobos tributarios, e cuxo territorio ocupaba máis que o leste de Virxinia.
