A Lamprologus a sugarasúszójú halak (Actinopterygii) osztályának sügéralakúak (Perciformes) rendjébe, ezen belül a bölcsőszájúhal-félék (Cichlidae) családjába tartozó nem.
Előfordulásuk A Lamprologus-fajok előfordulási területe a Tanganyika-tó és a Kongó-medence. Többjüket akváriumi halként tartják.
